Having sensitive teeth can make it painful to eat your favorite foods and drink your favorite beverages. This sensitivity is usually caused by worn tooth enamel or exposed roots. When these vulnerable areas of your teeth are met with hot, cold, or acidic substances, the nerves in your tooth will be irritated, which causes pain. When addressing pain from your sensitive teeth, your first step should be to meet with a dentist at Academy Dental to identify the source of your pain. However, there are still changes to your routine that you can make to help deal with your sensitive teeth:

  1. Change How You Brush Your Teeth: There are numerous toothpastes created specifically for sensitive teeth that help prevent pain. These toothpastes will temporarily fill holes in the enamel and roots, reducing your nerves’ exposure to substances, therefore blocking pain. You should also be using a soft toothbrush, rather than one with stiff bristles. This switch will reduce the abrasion that leads to more exposure of sensitive parts of your teeth. When using a soft toothbrush, you should also focus on not brushing too hard, as that will cause your enamel to deteriorate faster.
  2. Change What You Eat and Drink: Acidic foods and drinks, such as coffee, fruit, and sodas, will further damage your enamel and increase the sensitivity of your teeth. Additionally, very hot or cold substances will cause further discomfort, so it is best to avoid those foods. Instead, you should try consuming more milk, cheese, and plain yogurt, since those products help protect against any acid and bacteria that will damage your teeth.
