Root Canal Q & A

What is a Root Canal?

Damage and decay can affect the interior portion of a tooth called the pulp that extends all the way to the root. A root canal is a procedure used to treat this damage before it can spread to surrounding teeth or affect the gums. Generally, a root canal removes the central portion of the tooth, therefore it is often followed by application of a dental crown to provide additional strength and protection.

What Should I Expect During Treatment?

A root canal procedure uses special tools to remove damaged tissue and debris from deep within the tooth. You will receive a local anesthetic to numb the tooth before the root canal procedure begins. After the damage to the pulp of the tooth is removed, the canal itself is usually sealed to prevent the redistribution of foreign matter into the lower portion of the root. At the conclusion, a temporary crown is placed over the tooth. A permanent crown will be ordered from the dental lab and will use an impression of your teeth in order to provide a perfect fit. You will be fitted with the permanent crown when it is finished being created.

Do Root Canals Cause a lot of Pain?

Dr. Thind takes great care to ensure you remain comfortable throughout your procedure. During your recovery any discomfort or residual soreness that you feel can be managed with pain medication.

Will my Tooth Require Special Care after a Root Canal?

Immediately following your root canal procedure, you should avoid biting hard. If possible, avoid chewing in that area. Regular brushing and flossing should continue as normal. During your initial consultation, Dr. Thind will be able to address any other concerns you may have about the procedure or recovery.
